Howard M. Shanker has represented environmental organizations, business interests, communities, Native American Tribes, and Native American organizations in complex constitutional, statutory, environmental, and natural resource based counseling and litigation for about 20 years. In addition to being a Member of The Shanker Law Firm, Howard is an adjunct professor at the Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law, where he teaches upper level courses in environmental justice and environmental litigation. Howard previously served a three year term, as an appointee of President Clinton, on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (“NEJAC”), Enforcement Subcommittee, where he worked to create policy to mitigate disparate negative impacts on low income and minority communities. In October, 2007, Mr. Shanker helped represent a delegation of Navajo testify at a hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on the issue of uranium mining and contamination on the Navajo Nation. Howard has been a guest lecturer at Berkley, Boalt Hall, Univ. of Ariz. Law School, Vermont, and Indiana Law Schools. In 2008, Howard was the Keynote speaker for the Navajo EPA annual conference in Window Rock, Arizona. On April 17, 2007, Howard Shanker was honored by the President of the Navajo Nation and the Navajo Nation Council for his legal work in furtherance of protecting the San Francisco Peaks, a site that is sacred to the Tribe. In 2008, Howard Shanker ran for Congress in Arizona Congressional District One. |
